It is the day of the royal wedding! The wedding ceremony of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is set to be a grand spectacle that is expected to draw in several thousand viewers across the world. If you’re watching the wedding and you want to know who the guests in attendance are, there’s some good news.
The news channel Sky News, assigned to cover the royal wedding, is using artificial intelligence – specifically Amazon’s Rekognition software built into an app called Who’s Who. The software has been developed by GrayMeta and will be utilised by SkyNews through the channel’s mobile app.
The app uses artificial intelligence to identify faces in the crowd and pull up relevant information about the face it recognises. It will work out of a database from the Amazon Web Services cloud, quickly pulling data on the faces stored in the database.
Previously, television channels relied on ‘celebrity spotters’ at high-profile events in order to help identify the people in attendance. This app could change all that.
However, according to a report by The Economist, facial-recognition software hasn’t been perfected yet. When used by UK law enforcement to identify criminals in public spaces in the past two years, it has proved to be inaccurate 95 percent of the time. The app developers, however, say the software has been considerably improved, this time around.
Well, let’s just hope there are no embarrassing mix-ups for the channels covering the event. You could also watch the event on The Quint, by following our live blog.
