No Threat, but UK Royal Wedding Fans in Windsor Face Tight Security

All royal fans coming to Windsor to watch the wedding of Britain's Prince Harry and American actress Meghan Markle will have to pass through tight security but there is no known threat to the event, a police commander told Reuters on Wednesday.

More than 100,000 people are expected to flock to the genteel town dominated by Windsor Castle where the couple will marry on Saturday in a glittering ceremony mixing traditional royal pomp with a flavour of Hollywood glamour.

Britain is on its second-highest threat level of severe, meaning an attack by militants is considered highly likely. Last year there were four deadly attacks blamed on terrorists which claimed 36 lives.

There is no particular threat for this event. There’s no intelligence to support that this event is going to be particularly targeted.
Jim Weems, tactical commander in chief for the wedding to Reuters

Some 5,000 officers were on duty in London when Prince William married Kate Middleton in a huge display of British pageantry in 2011 but Weems declined to say how many would be patrolling in Windsor on Saturday.

A Global Spectacle for the World, Not as Such for the Brits

More than 5,000 media and support staff have registered for official positions in Windsor for the wedding, along with more than 160 photographers and 79 international TV networks, Kensington Palace said in a statement.

Britain’s monarchy continues to be a source of fascination around the world; few other countries can emulate the pageantry that surrounds the royals.

A global audience will be watching but a number of polls have suggested that most Britons are not as enthralled by the nuptials as the media.

A YouGov poll, commissioned by anti-monarchist pressure group Republic, found that 66 percent of Britons were not interested in the event, with 60 percent of Britons planning to have a normal weekend.

The poll also showed that 57 percent of respondents believed the royal family should pay not only for the wedding but also for the costs of police, which are expected to surpass the 6 million pounds ($8 million) price tag for the 2011 wedding of Harry's brother Prince William to wife Kate.

However, other surveys show most Britons are in favour of the monarchy continuing in Britain and that the wedding and the birth last month of William and Kate's third child, Prince Louis, were events of which Britain could be proud.

Father of the Groom, Prince Charles, to Walk Meghan Down the Aisle

"The Prince of Wales is pleased to be able to welcome Ms Markle to The Royal Family in this way," Kensington Palace said in a statement.

Meghan Markle's Mother Has Tea with the Royals

Meghan Markle's mother Doria Ragland has had a series of whirlwind visits with senior royals since her arrival from California.

She met Prince Harry's brother, Prince William, and his wife Kate and their two oldest children, Prince George, 4, and Princess Charlotte, 3, at Windsor Castle on Thursday afternoon.

Palace officials said Harry and Meghan Markle were also present, and that the meeting was followed by a rehearsal dinner.

Ragland also had tea with Harry's father Prince Charles and his wife Camilla on Wednesday. She has not yet met Harry's grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, but Buckingham Palace officials said she will meet the queen for tea on Friday at Windsor Castle.

Officials did not say if Prince Philip, the queen's husband, will be present at that meeting. He is recovering from hip replacement surgery.

Markle will Drop The Word 'Obey' From Her Vows

Meghan Markle will make a break from traditional wedding vows and not say she will “obey” Prince Harry in her nuptials at St George's Chapel, according to media reports.

Meghan is not the first one to drop the word, ‘obey’ from her vows. Even Princess Diana and Kate Middleton did not vow to ‘obey’ their husbands.

The royal couple are bringing their own modern touch to their marriage ceremony. Instead of using traditional vows, the royal couple have selected words from The Marriage Service from Common Worship (2000), Yorkshire Evening Post reported.

The marriage service features contemporary language – using the word “you” instead of “thee” and “thou”.
