We all know that OnePlus is working on its version of a smart television, which was first expected to launch by 2020. However, reports coming in this week suggest the launch time frame might be earlier than we thought.
This has been mentioned by leakster Ishan Agarwal through his Twitter handle on Friday last week. He pointed out, quoting his source that the launch of the smart TV from OnePlus might happen soon.
He hasn’t detailed the product in question and nor do we have a tentative launch data for the product, but preponing its launch is an indication that the company is now keen on competing in this segment as well.
However, the report also gives us a hint that the upcoming OnePlus smart TV might not actually cost a lot, and that’s because the company might opt against using an OLED screen for the product.
Does this mean OnePlus will push its TV in the pricing-friendly but competitive segment? It is possible that the OnePlus smart TV could get priced in the sub 50 to 60K market, which is pricier than Xiaomi Mi TV series, but not by a lot.
The news about the upcoming smart TVwas first shared by Pete Lau, Founder and CEO, OnePlus in September last year. Pricing of the product will be crucial, especially when they’re making one for the first time ever.
After all, going steep with pricing might not suit everyone’s budget, especially when nobody knows what they’ll get from the product.
What we do hope is, OnePlus will make a TV screen-friendly software platform version of Oxygen OS and partner with Google to get support for Android TV access (and thousands of apps).
