Team India defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday, 2 July to register their sixth win at the ICC World Cup 2019 that secured them a passage to the semifinals.
Coming into the match on the back of a poor loss to England, Team India were under a certain amount of pressure and under scrutiny – for selections, tactics and approach. However, Virat Kohli and company bounced back from that defeat in some style. The team management got the selections right – even if certain strategies employed have to be questioned – and the players took the field with the right approach. The platform for the win was set up by Rohit Sharma's hundred and his stupendous opening partnership with KL Rahul.
Here's a recap of all the major records broken, milestones reached, significant feats and other interesting statistics from the match.
Rohit Sharma's 104 against Bangladesh on Tuesday was his:
With his 4th hundred in this World Cup, Rohit Sharma set a new record for most 100s scored by an Indian batsman in a particular World Cup; he broke Sourav Ganguly's feat of scoring 3 hundreds in the 2003 event.
Rohit Sharma hit five sixes during the course of his 104. With his fourth six, he broke MS Dhoni's record for the most sixes by an Indian batsman in ODIs.
With his first scoring shot – the six he hit off Mashrafe Mortaza, Rohit Sharma also completed 1,000 ODI runs in the year 2019. This was the third year in a row that Rohit Sharma had scored more than 1,000 runs in ODIs.
Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul stitched together a 180-run partnership which would be India's highest opening partnership in World Cup matches.
The 180-run stand would also be the highest opening stand against Bangladesh in World Cup matches. Prior to Rohit Sharma and Rahul's feat, the highest opening stand against Bangladesh in WC matches was 128 – set by England's Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow earlier in the competition.
On Tuesday, India's openers scored 69 runs in the first ten overs. Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul together hit eight fours and two sixes, and played out 30 dot balls in the first ten overs. This was in stark contrast to the match against England when the Indian batsmen played out 48 dot balls and only managed to score a total of 28 runs.
Mustafizur Rahman was Bangladesh's wrecker-in-chief; the left-arm pacer returned figures of 5-59 from his ten overs which were the best returns for a Bangladesh pacer in World Cup matches. Prior to Mustafizur on Tuesday, no other Bangladesh pacer had taken a 5-wicket haul at the World Cup.
With his 5-wicket haul on Tuesday, Mustafizur Rahman equalled Abdur Razzak's tally of 4 5-wicket hauls - which is the most any Bangladesh bowler has taken in ODIs.
In pursuit of a target of 315, Bangladesh only managed 40 for 1 in their first ten overs which was their lowest powerplay 1 scores in World Cup 2019.
The 66-run stand between Sabbir Rahman and Mohammad Saifuddin would become Bangladesh's highest 7th wicket partnership in World Cup matches. It would also be the highest 7th wicket stand against India in World Cup matches.
