Rohit Scores Fourth Ton in WC 2019 to Equal Sangakkara’s Record

On Tuesday, Rohit Sharma became the first Indian to hit four centuries in a single edition of a World Cup. The Indian vice-captain reached the feat against Bangladesh in Birmingham in their penultimate group match with a score of 104.

Rohit went past Sourav Ganguly, who scored three centuries in the 2003 edition of the World Cup in South Africa. Overall, Rohit has now scored five World Cup hundred with the one coming in 2015 and occupies the second position on the most hundreds list in World Cup history.

Sachin Tendulkar leads the table with six centuries. While Rohit is joint second with Kumar Sangakkara and Ricky Ponting.

Meanwhile, the Indian vice-captain with his 26th ODI hundred equalled another record of Sangakkara of scoring four centuries in a World Cup. The SrI Lankan legend scored four consecutive centuries in the previous edition of the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Prior to the century against Bangladesh, Rohit has reached the triple figure scores against South Africa (122), Pakistan (140) and England (102). All the centuries came i winning cause except the one against England.

In the process, Rohit Sharma also became only the second Indian after Tendulkar to score 500 runs in a single edition of the World Cup. Tendulkar breached the 500-mark twice during his illustrious career (673 runs in 2003 and 523 runs in 1996).

Coming into the match, Rohit needed just 60 runs to cross the 500-run mark in the World Cup. Rohit now leads the run getters list in the competition with 544 runs from 7 innings.

Rohit starred in a 180-run stand with Rahul, which is the highest opening stand in this competition till now. Rohit was eventually dismissed by Soumya Sarkar in the 30th over.

Rohit also completed 1000 runs in 2019 to become the only Indian batsman to reach 1000-run mark in this short span. He has become the third player after Finch (1138) and Usman Khawaja (1067) to reach 1000 ODI runs in 2019.
