Pakistan’s cricketing star, Shahid Afridi, took the occasion of India’s 72nd Independence Day to wish his “neighbours across the border” on the special day, and added that he hoped that the two nations would “resolve their issues for a better, peaceful and prosperous region” soon.

In his tweet, he said that he also wished for more “frequent matches” between the two nations.

Afridi’s choice of posting a message of peace between the two nations on Independence Day, has certainly won him a lot of favour from both sides of the border.

His hope for a greater number of matches between the two nations, addresses the decision made by the Indian government back in 2012, that they would no longer allow any other bilateral series with Pakistan due to “political tensions” between the two.

Since the government’s declaration, the two teams have not played a full bilateral Test series since 2007, when Pakistan visited India for three Tests and five One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

They played a short series of three ODIs and two T20s in India in December, 2012, the report adds. Since then, the two nations have only played against one another in ICC organised tournaments or the Asia Cup.

Accordingly, the two teams will play against each other in the Asia Cup later this year and then in the 2019 World Cup, to be held in England.
