A lioness gave birth to four cubs, three females and one male, in a wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat, but two of them died later, a forest official said on Friday, 23 August.
The lioness, Sarita - kept at the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Porbandar district under a lion gene pool project - gave birth to the cubs in the wee hours of 21 August , D T Vasavada, chief conservator of forest (Saurashtra), told PTI over the phone.
However, the male cub and one of the female cubs died due to weakness on Thursday, 22 August, he said. "Sarita was found to be weak and was not in a position to feed her newborn cubs for 12 hours," Vasavada said.
Veterinary doctors and officials from the Sakkarbaug Zoo at Junagadh checked their health and gave them powdered milk, he said. However, two of them could not survive, the official said, adding their carcasses have been sentto the zoo's hospital for postmorterm.

For 28-year-old Surat resident Farah Abdul (name changed), life has been very challenging. From losing her parents to suffering from a deformity in the spine since early childhood, she never thought she will be able to walk normally, look straight, or could lead a normal life.
However, a team of doctors at Civil Hospital here has given a new lease of life to her by going for a critical surgery of the spine that has corrected her hunched-over posture to near normal. The surgery was risky as correcting a bent spine could result in paralysis, but doctors decided to do it considering the poor condition of the patient.
According to the hospital's superintendent MM Prabhakar, the woman came with an 80-degree curvature of the spine due to ankylosing spondylitis and she was suffering from the problem for over a decade.

State education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama on Friday submitted to the Gujarat High Court that he wants to become a witness and depose before the court in connection with the election petition filed against his assembly poll victory from Dholka constituency in 2017. The petition against Chudasama has been filed by Congress leader Ashwin Rathod.
While hearing the case, counsel for Chudasama submitted that he wants to modify the list of witnesses submitted by the minister for the trial as Chudasama wants to depose before the court as a witness.
However, the submission was vehemently opposed by Rathod's counsel on the ground that the list of witnesses in the case have been already submitted by Chudasama in the past and the court should not allow him to modify it.
Notably, Chudasama had earlier submitted a list of five witnesses in the case, which did not include his name. Deposing as a witness would mean that the minister would have to clarify his stand related to the controversial election and will be also open to cross-examination by Rathod's counsels.

The Delhi-based woman, who blamed suspended IAS officer Gaurav Dahiya of bigamy, cheating, criminal intimidation, and breach of trust, on Friday, 23 August, said she is happy that Dahiya has agreed to undergo a DNA test to ascertain the paternity of her child.
She also said her allegations against the bureaucrat were found to be true and hence he has been suspended by the state government. She also refuted the counter allegations of blackmailing, harassment, and extortion leveled against her by Dahiya.
The suspended officer had alleged that the woman was blackmailing her for money and she surfaced with the allegations only after he refused to pay her. She said the bureaucrat's father was pressurising her to leave Dahiya when she was already six-months pregnant.
The woman, Neelu Singh, also said the bureaucrat had offered her money so that she leaves him forever.
