A middle-aged man allegedly shot a 10-year-old girl on Tuesday evening, 8 January, when she asked him whether the gun he was carrying was a toy, The Times of India reported on Thursday, 10 January.

The accused has been sent to jail, the report said, adding that the girl is undergoing treatment in a nearby community hospital.

According to the report, the incident took place at Paltha in Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh.

“We (Ajay and his wife) were working in the farm when we saw accused Vidya Ram carrying his single barrel gun, roaming near the area where our children (daughter Kamini and son) were playing.”
Ajay Pal Maurya, victim’s father, as told to TOI

“When my daughter asked him whether the gun he was carrying was a toy, Vidya Ram took aim at her and pressed the trigger. My daughter fell down after receiving bullet injuries in her hand and stomach. Before I could reach the spot, he escaped,” Maurya said.
