A 30-year-old man was shot dead by a dog owner in Delhi after he threw stones at the dog, Hindustan Times reported on Monday, 7 January.

The incident took place in Delhi's Welcome Colony on 6 January, when a dog started barking at the victim, Afaq Ali, while he was walking on a road.

The dog apparently tried to bite Afaq, following which he threw a handful of stones at the animal, new agency ANI reported. Seeing this, the dog owner, Mehtab came out with a gun and shot Afaq after a brief argument.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Deputy Commissioner of Police (northeast) Atul Kumar Thakur said that the police received a call from Afaq's father-in-law around 7 pm, informing them about the incident.

He was taken to Guru Teg Bahadur hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Police told the daily that a case has been registered and the accused is on the run.
