In a shocking incident, a family of six in Ranchi, Jharkand, committed suicide allegedly owing to mounting financial pressure, as the only earning member of the family had been ill since a long time.
The family – the grandparents in their 60s, their son and daughter-in-law (in their 40s) and their two minor grandchildren – committed suicide in their third-floor flat in CDM Apartments, near Khajanchi Pond.
“The old couple hung themselves, while the middle-aged lady ended her life by consuming poison and her husband died after jumping from his balcony," Hazaribagh Sadar DSP Chandan Vats told The New Indian Express.
The police arrived at the possibility of suicide on finding four suicide notes in the house.
Vats also told the newspaper that the possible cause of the mass suicide was detailed in these notes: the family could not bear any more financial pressure that they had been facing due to the “prolonged disease” of the only earning member of the family – Naresh Maheshwari.
This had led to an enormous debt on the family, the notes reportedly stated.
According to the report, the Maheshwari family were involved in the dry fruits business. However, Naresh had closed his shop for an extended period of time due to his illness, which led to the family’s financial burden and compelled them to take the drastic step.
In a recent incident of mass suicide, a family of 11 was found dead in their home in North Delhi’s Burari. The final autopsy report confirmed that their deaths were caused by hanging, much to the shock of the family’s relatives and neighbours.
