In a sensational murder, a senior health official was on Friday, 29 March, shot dead at point-blank range at her office in Punjab's Kharar by a man who later pumped a bullet into himself, police said.
The official, Neha Shorie, was posted with the Drug and Food Chemical Laboratory in Kharar and dealt with licensing in Mohali and Ropar districts.
The accused, Balwinder Singh of Morinda, entered her office and fired three bullets from his licensed revolver at Shorie at around 11.40 am, a police official said.
After firing bullets at the woman health officer, the accused tried to flee the spot on his motorcycle but was caught.

Three people including two minors were caught by the local police in Junagadh for allegedly murdering a 30-year old person, Mehboob Sumra.
The police said the three along with their fourth unidentified accomplice had come on bikes and opened fire at Sumra who got shot in the head and died on the spot.
Besides killing Sumra, the firing also injured one Jishan Amrelia, an autorickhaw driver who had come to the petrol pump to fill oil. Amrelia received a bullet injury in one of his legs.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has claimed to have busted a massive gold smuggling racket with seizure of 110 kg of gold and arrest of seven persons here.
Acting on a tip-off, its sleuths seized 75 kg of smuggled gold concealed in two vehicles in Mumbai's Dongri area recently, and detained Abdul Ahad Zarodarwala, Shaikh Abdul Ahad and Shoeb Zarodarwala.
Shoeb Zarodarwala and Abdul Ahad Zarodarwala allegedly admitted that they had received a total of over 200 kg of smuggled gold from one Nisar Aliyar.
They sold smuggled gold in the wholesale market for a commission and one of their customers was Raju alias Manoj Jain who had bought around 100 kg of smuggled gold from them in the past, the two told DRI sleuths.
The sale proceeds were sent through "non-banking channels" (hawala) and they had sent Rs 12 crore through one Aaquil Fruitwala to Dubai, they allegedly revealed.
Nisar Aliyar, when summoned by the DRI, allegedly confessed that he had smuggled more than 200 kg of gold into India from Dubai by concealing it in containers of brass scrap.
Apart from Zarodarwalas, he had also sold around 30 kg of smuggled goods to one Happy Dhakad, he said.
A total of 110 kg of gold and Rs 1.81 crore in cash have been seized during the probe so far, the DRI said.

Two persons including a minor were held by the police Friday for allegedly killing a 23-year-old man while trying to rob him.
Ramaankar Yadav, native of Uttar Pradesh, had come to Mumbai to visit his mother and brother who lived in suburban Kurla, a crime branch official said.
Yadav was going to Kurla terminus to book train tickets when two persons on motorbike tried to snatch away his bag on SCLR road in the wee hours of March 18.
When Yadav resisted, one of them stabbed him in the stomach before fleeing, the official said.
Yadav was found lying in a pool of blood on the footpath. He was declared dead before admission at hospital.
A case was registered at V B Nagar Police Station.
The two suspects, one of them a minor, were held Friday, the official said, adding that further probe was on.

A 40-year old Romanian man called Lupoi Emil was arrested by the Delhi police on Friday, 29 March for allegedly trying to plant a skimming device inside an ATM in south Delhi’s Mehrauli.
“The accused has visited India multiple times. He arrived in the second week of March this year. He, along with an associate, tried to install skimming machines, which can capture the data of ATM users and copy them onto cloned cards. He has targeted several unguarded ATMs in Delhi,” said DCP (South) Vijay Kumar.
“Our team spotted the accused taking a long time at an ATM. When questioned, the man’s conduct made the team suspicious, and he was checked,” a police officer said.

Three youths were arrested for allegedly robbing an advocate and a Delhi Police constable in Dhaula Kuan and Chankya Puri areas, officials said Friday.
The accused have been identified as Aniket (19), Rajkumar (20) and Dalip Kumar (18), they said.
The arrests were made at around 9 pm Thursday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) Anto Alphonse said.
During interrogation, the accused persons said they have committed many robberies in Dhaula Kuan and Chanya Puri areas during night.
They disclosed that on the intervening night of March 22 and 23, they targeted one advocate near 11 Murti and robbed his valuables.
They also admitted that they had robbed one constable of the Delhi Police at Cantt area while he was returning home from his duty, the DCP said.
They said they used to ply in a car and pretend like passengers. They also used to offer lift to passerby. After getting the victim in their car, they used to forcefully beat and rob them at gunpoint. After robbing the passenger, they used to throw the victim at a lonely place and move away from the spot, Alphonse said.

A youth and one of his friend were booked on Wednesday for allegedly barging into a woman’s house after she rejected his marriage proposal. The youth allegedly broke open a door of the house, misbehaved with the family members and threatened them with dire consequences if his proposal was not accepted.
Police said the 20-year-old woman, who is a final year student persuing a diploma course in pharmacy, had been staying with her family in Kavi Nagar area of Ghaziabad.
Her father has alleged that one Rahul Kumar had been harassing her after she rejected his marriage proposal.

An inter-state gang selling SIM cards on fake identification was busted by the Delhi Police and seven people were arrested, an officer said on Friday.
Mohammad Shakeel (21), Rachit (23), Ramji Patel (21) from Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh along with Vishal (23), Prince Hinduja (25), Pankaj (23) and Manish Daima (22), all residents of Delhi were arrested by the northwest district police, they said.
The accused have sold more than 1,500 SIM cards in the last six months, the police said.
According to the officer, while probing a criminal case, it was found that the suspect's mobile number was registered in the name of a person residing in Kannuaj.
The man was questioned and it was found that the SIM card was indeed issued on the ID but he was not using it.
During further investigation, police traced down one Shakeel who used to work as a distributor with a leading telecom firm and had issued the alleged SIM card.
Shakeel was interrogated and a mobile handset was recovered from his possession in which he had used the same SIM card in January.

A seven-year-old boy was left with a cracked skull and is on ventilator support after allegedly being assaulted by his mother's partner here, police said Friday. The accused, Arun Anand, 36, who was arrested, has at least four cases against him, they said.
Various IPC sections, including 303 (attempt to murder), and Juvenile Justice Act have been slapped against him, a police official said.
The boy, who suffered critical head injuries and bruises all over, is battling for life.
A doctor treating him at a private medical college hospital in Ernakulam district, said the boy was on ventilator support and there was no response from him.
Doctors are monitoring his situation and he is under observation for 48 hours, according to hospital sources.
