The results of the bye-elections to one Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh and six Assembly constituencies, spread across UP, Rajasthan, Odisha, Bihar, and Chhattisgarh, were declared on Thursday, 8 December.
While Samajwadi Party (SP) candidate Dimple Yadav swept the high-profile Lok Sabha bypoll of Manipuri, thus securing the party's family bastion, Kedar Prasad Gupta of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win the Kurhani bypoll in Bihar by a little over 3,000 votes.
Here are the final results of the bye-elections:
The SP's Dimple Yadav won the Manipuri seat in UP against her rival Raghuraj Singh Shakya of the BJP by a record margin of 2.9 lakh votes.
With her election win, Yadav made history by becoming the first woman MP of Mainpuri.
The Parliamentary constituency had fallen vacant after the death of SP patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav in October this year.
SP leader Dimple Yadav, a former lawyer, is party chief Akhilesh Yadav's wife and Mulayam Singh's daughter-in-law.
On the other hand, Madan Bhaiya of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) defeated the BJP's Rajkumari Saini from Khatauli with a margin of 22,143 votes.
There was a direct contest between the ruling BJP and the opposition, SP-Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) alliance, in the seat.
Around 56.46 percent of polling was recorded in Khatauli.
The bypoll was necessitated after the disqualification of BJP MLA Vikram Singh Saini following his conviction in a case.
The BJP's Akash Saxena (Honey) won the Rampur bypoll against the SP's Mohammad Asim Raja by 34,136 votes.
While the SP put up Khan's close associate Asim Raja for the bypoll, the BJP gave the ticket to Saxena, who is also one of the complainants against Khan.
In Rajasthan, the Congress' Anil Kumar Sharma won the bypoll from Sardarshahar by 26,852 votes, thus defeating the BJP's Ashok Kumar.
The bye-election was necessitated by the demise of Congress MLA Bhanwar Lal Sharma, who served for seven terms.
Apart from Sharma and Kumar, there were seven other candidates in the fray, including five Independents. The voter turnout in Rajasthan's Sardarshahar was 72.09 percent.
The bypoll is significant as it was held just a year before state elections.
Kedar Prasad Gupta of the BJP won the Kurhani bye-election in Bihar against Manoj Singh of the Janata Dal (United) with a margin of 3,649 votes.
There were 13 candidates, including five Independents, in the fray for the Kurhani Assembly constituency in the state's Muzaffarpur district.
The battle was primarily between the BJP and JD(U) candidates, who are both former MLAs.
The seat had fallen vacant after the disqualification of sitting RJD MLA Anil Kumar Sahani. Nearly 58 percent of voters had exercised their franchise on Monday in the bypoll.
In Odisha, the Biju Janata Dal's Barsha Singh Bariha, the daughter of late MLA Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha, trumped the BJP's Pradeep Purohit in the Padampur seat by over 42,000 votes.
The seat had fallen vacant after the death of veteran tribal leader Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha in October this year.
There were 10 candidates in the fray. Over 81 percent of 2.57 lakh eligible voters exercised their franchise in the bye-election to the Padampur seat.
Meanwhile, Savitri Manoj Mandavi won the bypoll from Bhanupratappur in Chhattisgarh with 21,171 votes, thus defeating the BJP's Bramhanand Netam.
The main candidates in the fray were Mandavi, Netam, and Independent candidate Akbar Ram Korram.
The bye-election was called after the sudden death of Congress MLA and Deputy Speaker of the Chhattisgarh Assembly Manoj Singh Mandavi in October this year.
Over 64.86 percent was polled in the Bhanupratappur constituency.
The counting of votes polled during the bye-elections to the Mainpuri Lok Sabha seat and six Assembly seats commenced at 8 am on Thursday.
