The results of the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections may determine whether the Aam Aadmi Party gets recognised as a national party in the immediate future.
As per experts, while Gujarat will be a triangular contest between Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and the AAP, Himachal is more likely to retain its two-party nature.
But why is this important? and what does this mean for AAP? Read here.
It is a clash of models in Gujarat. The BJP has been in power for about 27 years in the state, barring 1996 when Shankersinh Vaghela became the chief minister for a year with outside support from the Congress.
The 2017 elections saw Congress deliver its best performance in 32 years, bagging 77 of the 182 seats. Several of its MLAs, however, defected to the BJP.
This time it is the BJP, Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party that Gujarat has to choose from. In the last 32 years, no other party has challenged the BJP’s election machinery the way AAP has.

With just 68 Assembly seats, Himachal Pradesh is a small but complex state and elections here aren't easy to predict.
Most seats have under 90,000 voters and some, like Lahaul & Spiti, have less than 30,000. Lesser voters means narrower margins. A few thousand votes could change equations in a seat, rebel candidates polling even a few hundred votes could make the difference between winning and losing for the bigger parties.
However, there are a few broad trends that are clearly visible in the poll-bound state. The Quint's Aditya Menon examined these with the help of data, inputs from the ground and a little bit of history. To read more, click here.

The Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP's) Gujarat Chief Ministerial candidate Isudan Gadhvi said that it was difficult to predict results through exit polls.
"BJP won't form govt, we'll win over 51 seats in phase 1 while over 52 seats in phase 2. Exit polls will be proved wrong. BJP is declining in the state," he told news agency ANI.
Reacting to the prediction of several exit polls, Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi said that the BJP, along with the people of Gujarat, is scripting new history.
"The people of Gujarat have fought the elections more than the BJP. Our party, BJP, will further expedite the development in the state," he told news agency ANI.
