Veteran actor Dharmendra campaigned on behalf of his wife and BJP's Mathura MP Hema Malini for a day in her constituency on Sunday, 14 April.

"Our government and its officials should treat our country like they would treat their own mothers. India is our mother and we are willing to take every measure possible to protect her," Dharmendra said at the rally in Mathura.

"In my journey through Bollywood, I have received a lot of love, blessings and praise from all of you. Today, I am here to seek the same love and blessings for (my wife) Hema (in her political journey). Will you give us our right,” he asked the cheering crowd.

Earlier during the day, the Bollywood actress had tweeted a photo taken at her house, just before the two left for campaigning.

"Today is also a special day for me! Dharamji is here in Mathura to campaign for a whole day on my behalf. The public is waiting eagerly to get a glimpse of him.. A photo taken in my house in Mathura just now before we leave for campaigning," the tweet said.

The actress' campaign has been inspiring jokes and memes galore on social media.

Her farm woman avatar, wherein she tried to cut the wheat crop in Uttar Pradesh, invited not just scorn from the Opposition but also the tag of 'drama girl' for her.
