Watch: Why Startups Should Worry About NetNeutrality
Everybody’s fighting for Net Neutrality in India.
Why?
Because you and I are affected by it.
But you know who will be most at risk?
Startups!
Here’s Why
Flipkart was once a startup, now they are a multi-million dollar company, and so they could plan a tie-up with Airtel Zero.
And then they realised, if they had been a startup today, they would have been choked at birth by Airtel Zero. So Flipkart Backed out!
If there is no Net Neutrality, startups will have to pay telcos money for faster bandwith.
What if you can’t afford it? Too bad. Your business just has to suffer.
It’s like a caste system on the net, only cash-rich companies will survive. Startups, even one’s with great ideas, may never succeed.
We spoke to a few startups and this is what they had to say:
Internet is an essential service and should be provided without any discrimination, zero rating platforms can seriously affect the freedom and growth of the billions of entrepreneurs, quite against the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Digital India’ vision of our government.
— Manav Sethi, Group CMO, Askme
We are against any intent or plan to bifurcate the Internet and create unfair advantages which benefit a few. Innovation is key to India’s mission of improving the lives of a billion citizens. We believe that an unequal Internet will hamper that by reducing the scope and pace of this innovation.
— Mr. Shashank ND, CEO and Founder, Practo
At Spuul, we think there’s a great number of areas - billing, advertising etc. being just some of them, where we can partner with telcos on revenue opportunities. However, from a service access standpoint, it needs to be a level playing field for everyone concerned.
— Subin Subaiah, CEO Spuul Global
I feel if there is no Net Neutrality, a startup like us will be at the mercy of telecom companies. Internet should be a level playing field.
— Anshul Sood, Co-Founder, Fermah Shoes
It will be very difficult for self funded startups to survive, if there is no Net Neutrality.
— Ajay Malhotra, Founder, innercover.com
