In October, Summer the dog was rescued from a road in Chattarpur by a volunteer from Umeed, an animal rehabilitation centre in Gurgaon.

Summer was found lying on the road paralysed, with multiple wounds and several fractures.

Amrita Phool from the NGO, which runs the rehabilitation centre, says:

It could have been a car accident or a dog fight.

Doctors Recommended Euthanasia

Summer was taken to three veterinarians and all of them said that there was no scope for her recovery. They recommended PTS or “Put to Sleep”, an act of putting an animal to death or allowing it to die by withholding extreme medical measures.

But Umeed being an anti-PTS shelter, decided to give Summer a fighting chance at life. “We will keep her here with us for her remaining days. We will give the best we can. Give her all the love we can,” says Amritika.

A Destiny’s Child

In the meantime, Summer was taken to another vet, who put her on homeopathic medicine and hydrotherapy. Within a week, instead of crawling in a hunched position, she started walking. After a month and a half, she was walking on all fours, running and jumping around. Today, she has integrated with other dogs and made some new friends too.

“We gave her a chance and left it on destiny and destiny has worked in her favour,” says Amritika.

Summer Needs a New Home

After a wonderful recovery, the organisation has put up Summer for adoption. “So please open your hearts for her. Take Summer home. She doesn’t need to be in a rehab centre,” says Bhavna Pandit, a volunteer with Umeed.

“Hopefully, there is someone out there who would fall in love with her,” hopes Amritika.
