A top Lashkar-e-Taiba militant, carrying a reward of Rs 10 lakh on his head, was killed in an encounter with police and army in Pulwama district, on Saturday, marking a major success for the security forces.
The gun-battle erupted when the hiding militants opened fire at the police party. Soon, the army was pressed into service and in the joint operation, he was finally killed.
The slain militant Irshad Ganie, a resident of Kakapora of Pulwama about 40 kms south of here, was wanted for killing of eight armymen in Hyderpora in June 2013 besides several other attacks on army and police, official sources said.
Another encounter between security forces and militants broke out in the Palhalan area of Baramulla’s Pattan, after the militants opened fired at the security at 5 am, on Friday, 16 February.
Forces reportedly launched a cordon-and-search-operation in Tantray Mohalla area on Thursday, 15 February, evening after inputs about the presence of militants.
Internet services have been suspended as a precautionary measure.
