These nursing students are free to make all the mistakes they like while treating their patients – that’s because their patients aren’t real.
The trainees practice on specially designed mannequins in the new state-of-the-art Clinical Learning Center at the University of Michigan’s nursing school.
The school has six simulation rooms with mannequins capable of bleeding, vomiting, giving birth and screaming out in pain – just like real patients.
The simulations mimic real-life patient situations that many students will not get the chance to see during clinical rotations.
A team of specially trained simulation instructors who sit in front of a bank of screens and behind a one-way mirror, act as the mannequin’s voice and body.
They use wireless controls to prompt just about any possible physiological response, testing the students’ skills to the limit.
Students can practice suctioning secretions from the trachea, electrically shocking the heart into starting again and administering intravenous drugs.
