Recently, actor Sonali Bendre spoke about her battle with cancer. The actor has been extremely vocal about her struggle with the disease. She spoke about using social media platforms to raise awareness and fight the stigma of speaking about one’s “illness” in public.
“There were people from all strata of society writing in to me. Suddenly I said, if this has been so prevalent why haven’t I heard of it?”Sonali Bendre
She also spoke about how women are raised to “tolerate” the pain and don’t complain even when they’re in excruciating physical distress.
“You’re taught to bear the pain, be tough. You’ve to bear a child, bear the pain.”Sonali Bendre
Sonali also opened up about choosing the USA to get help for her treatment and how she thinks Indian hospital management should do better when it comes to spreading awareness about cancer.
“We went to a place where the only disease they dealt with was this. So they would have more data (...) You put out so many posters, why don’t you put more posters saying “Get your testing done”?Sonali Bendre
Sonali sought medical treatment in New York in mid-2018 and returned to India at the end of the year. She returned to work in February, shortly after her 44th birthday.
