Barely a month after the story of Dana Majhi created massive outrage in the country, four daughters from Odisha’s Kalahandi were forced to shoulder their mother’s corpse after being denied help by neighbours.

Eighty-year-old Kanak Satpathy had taken resort to begging after her husband’s death left the family of four in an economic crisis. Following Kanak’s death, her daughters requested their neighbours to carry her corpse to the crematorium grounds.

Failing to receive any help from locals, Kanak’s children decided to carry her corpse in a cot. They also pulled down the roof of their house to retrieve pieces of wood to be used for their mother’s funeral pyre.
