Nice Attack: 84 Dead, at Least 100 Injured

At least 84 people have been killed in the southern French town of Nice when a truck ran into a crowd celebrating the Bastille Day national holiday on Thursday night. The attack left at least 100 injured, including over 50 children.

The driver, who drove at 50 kilometres per hour for over 100 metres along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront before hitting the mass of spectators, was shot dead. Officials said weapons and grenades were found inside the 25-tonne, unmarked articulated truck.

Addressing a press conference via Skype in a dingy basement of a banquet hall in Mazgaon, Mumbai, on Friday, 15 July 2016, Islamic scholar Zakir Naik spoke to the media about allegations of ‘influencing’ the terrorists responsible for the Holey Artisan Bakery attack in Dhaka on 1 July 2016. Prior to this, his attempt at addressing the media had been continuously thwarted due to the inability of any venue and last-minute cancellations.

Though the press conference was slated to begin at “sharp 10 am”, until 11:30 am only a recorded message from Naik was played out for a visibly agitated press, amidst extremely heavy police presence at the conference.
