Two Incidents Of Chain Snatching in Broad Daylight Shock Chennai

One victim was dragged for 100 metres by the chain snatchers before they managed to escape.

A CCTV footage has gone viral showing two thieves on a motorbike snatching a gold chain from a woman’s neck. The snatchers dragged the woman for 100 metres before managing to escape with the chain. This brazen act has shocked the people of Chennai and raised many questions about women safety.

Fifty-year-old Menaka was attacked while she was on her way to attend a wedding ceremony on 11 February. According to The Hindu, Menaka is a resident of Washermanpet area in Chennai. After the incident, she was found on the road unconscious. When taken to the hospital, doctors diagnosed injuries to her hands, legs and neck.

The notorious robbers have become a problem for the police department and locals, as such incidents in Chennai are on the rise. Hours after Menaka was robbed, an elderly couple Ashok Kumar and Jeyashri came under attack.

As the couple were walking on a deserted road, a thief sneaked on them from behind and snatched Jeyashri's chain. She lost her balance and fell down as she tried to hold on to her chain but the robber managed to take it away.

Both the thieves managed to get away with the chains. We have picked up vital clues from the CCTV footage and are working to nab the thieves.

Chain snatching is a common crime across India. In Chennai alone, 616 cases of chain snatching were registered by Chennai police in 2017.
