Vaman Mandavi, a tribal boy from Kirandul village, Dantewada clears his IIT mains Examination, securing first rank in the examination of IIT preparatory course. It is the one-year preparatory course for SC/ST candidates who have not qualified for a seat in the current year. Coming from a tribal community, where young boys are indiscriminately associated with farming and rearing, this boy pushes all demarcations to be an Engineer.
Vaman’s father passed away 18 years ago. His mother, Mangli Mandvi, is a worker at Anandwadi, which earns her only a meagre salary. But the dedication to educate her sons drove her to sell logs of wood in order to bear the extra expense of her son’s ambition. She is grateful to the government’s free education services, which helped her sons continue their schooling.
Vaman wants to be an engineer and fulfil his mother’s dream. It might have been difficult to imagine that this impoverished boy could stand victorious in cracking one of the most competitive examinations in the country, but given him and his mother’s grit, he is now one of the lucky few.
