The Aarushi-Hemraj double murder case has spanned over nine years, been investigated by three separate teams and subjected to two verdicts.

On 12 October, the Allahabad high court acquitted Rajesh and Nupur Talwar of murdering their fourteen-year-old daughter Aarushi and their stay-at-home domestic help Hemraj. The decision reversed the trial court’s verdict that convicted the dentist couple and sentenced them to life in prison. This guilty verdict however, was based purely on circumstantial evidence.

The trial court ruled that since there was no proof of anyone entering the locked house from the outside, the only two surviving members could’ve done it. This, the Allahabad high Court said is not enough to nail the Talwars. That they cannot be punished merely on the basis of suspicion and that they have to be given the benefit of doubt.

Here’s how the case transpired over the last nine years.
