The Supreme Court has clarified that privacy is a fundamental right, protected under the Constitution. This has huge implications for the validity of the Aadhaar programme, challenges to which were the reason behind this case in the first place.

The government insists that this judgment will not affect Aadhaar, because the government’s linkage of Aadhaar to various public and private schemes is already compliant with the Supreme Court’s judgment.
