Former Congress President and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi while addressing party members at the 84th Congress Plenary session on Saturday, 17 March, said she was saddened by the Modi government's attempts to weaken policies made by the UPA.
She also said the Congress was dedicated towards exposing the government’s fraud and lies using proofs. Gandhi asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ministers are “drunk on power”.
Under the leadership of former PM Dr Manmohan Singh, the economy of this country flourished. Our government formed policies which lifted millions of people from poverty. And today, Modi govt is weakening these policies.Sonia Gandhi
She added the Congress was fighting the “tyrannical” Modi government and that people have started realising that the promises made by the BJP in 2014 were “hollow”.
The promises of ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’ and ‘na khaaoonga na khaane doonga’ by the current government is nothing but ‘drama’ and their tactic to get votes.Sonia Gandhi
Gandhi stressed upon the importance of strengthening the party, and also spoke about the strength of alliance with like-minded parties.
There is only one priority: how to make Congress party stronger. Congress is not just a party, but an idea several years ahead of it’s time. Today a new chapter of the Congress party has begun. We need to build a nation that provides for every citizen. Every Congress member will dedicate their life to take this nation to great heights.Sonia Gandhi
She congratulated her son and Congress President Rahul Gandhi and said he was taking charge at a “challenging” time.
I congratulate Congress President Rahul Gandhi on his appointment and extend my best wishes. The responsibility of the party has rested upon his shoulders during a challenging time.Sonia Gandhi
Following her speech, Gandhi got off the dias and hugged her son amidst applause from the audience. Earlier in the day, the UPA chairperson also clicked a selfie at the plenary.
