1. Did Sasikala Bribe Jail Officials? DGP Denies DIG’s Report

AIADMK General Secretary and convict VK Sasikala Natarajan has been accused of bribing Karnataka Director General of Prisons (DGP) Satyanarayana Rao and city central jail officials for undue favours.

“Sasikala has given Rs 1 crore bribe to Rao and another Rs 1 crore was distributed among officials, including the warden of the central jail, where she is serving a four-year sentence in an illegal wealth case for allowing her special privileges,” a local news channel reported, quoting Deputy Inspector of Prisons (DIG) Roopa Moudgil’s report submitted to the state government.

Rao, however, denied the allegations.

3. Man Thrashed For Allegedly Carrying Beef in Nagpur, Four Arrested

A man was thrashed by a mob for allegedly carrying beef in Nagpur’s Bharsingi village on 12 July. Salim Ismail Sheikh, a resident of Katol town, was returning home on his bike when five or six men accosted him at a bus stop in Bharsingi village of Nagpur rural, and asked him to get off the two-wheeler.

The men asked him to show the meat he was carrying in the storage compartment of the bike. When he resisted, the men allegedly thrashed him, Nagpur rural Superintendent of Police Shailesh Balkawade said.

4. Junaid’s Lynching: Taking the Train Ride That Ended in a Murder

It has been over two weeks since a 16-year-old boy was lynched in a crowded train, in an incident of communal violence that shook the country.

When Hafiz Junaid left his house in Ballabhgarh in Haryana for a shopping trip to Delhi, his family did not know he would return home soaked in blood, cold and dead.

The Quint travelled on the same train that took Junaid from Sadar Bazar to Asaoti in an attempt to understand the chain of events that led to the murder of the teenager on 22 June.
