1. Live: Heavy Mumbai Rains Give Way to Sporadic Showers on Day 2

At least six people have been killed in Mumbai, as heavy rains continue to lash the city, causing severe flooding and waterlogging. Reports suggest Tuesday, 29 August marked the wettest August day in Mumbai in 20 years. However, the BMC has said that the situation is not as bad as that of the 2005 floods.

2. 42 Children Die in the Last 48 Hours in Gorakhpur’s BRD Hospital

Forty two children have died in the last 48 hours at the Baba Raghav Das Medical College in Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, less than two weeks after 105 children died at the state-run hospital. However, Hindustan Times reported that 61 children have died at the hospital in the last 72 hours. According to the daily, the deaths were reportedly due to various reasons, that include encephalitis, health complexities in newborns, pneumonia, sepsis etc, leading to the hospital being overcrowded.

3. Hurricane Harvey: 24-Yr-Old Indian Student Dies, Another Critical

A 24-year-old Indian student has died, while another is said to be in a critical condition, hours after the two were rescued from drowning in a Texas lake as Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc. The deceased has been identified as Nikhil Bhatia, a Jaipur native who was pursuing a Masters in Public Health at the Texas A&M University. The other student has been identified as Shalini Singh, a 25-year-old from New Delhi.

Bhatia, and Singh were both brought to the local hospital in a critical condition.

5. Aadhaar Deadline for Social Welfare Schemes Pushed to 31 December

The Supreme Court, on 30 August, said it would hear a batch of petitions on Aadhaar-related matters in November, after the Centre announced that it would extend till 31 December the deadline to furnish Aadhaar to avail benefits of social welfare schemes.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, said there was no urgency to hear the matter after Attorney General KK Venugopal told the bench that the Centre will extend the 30 September deadline.
