Mumbai top cop and former Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Himanshu Roy shot himself with his service revolver at his south Mumbai residence.

Fondly called ‘Hercules Roy’, his colleagues remember him as a fitness freak, a soft-spoken, sharp, disciplined and bright officer. He was an IPS officer from the 1988 Maharashtra cadre. He became the Superintendent of Police of Nashik in 1995 and became the youngest SP then. He was the Commissioner Of Police of Nashik from 2004 - 2007 and became the Joint Commissioner Of Police(Crime Branch) in 2009. He was also the Chief of Maharashtra ATS and set up the cyber crime cell and women’s cell of the Mumbai Police.

In his his two-and-a-half-decade-long service in the Maharashtra Police, he played a key role in several high-profile cases.

  • Was first posted in Malegaon where he handled the post Babri riots
  • Under his leadership, 26/11 accused Ajmal Kasab was shifted from Mumbai to Pune’s Yerawada Jail in absolute secrecy
  • Exposed the IPL fixing scandal in 2013
  • Arrested actor Vindu Dara Singh for alleged links with bookies
  • Cracked the Pallavi Purkayastha murder case
  • Played a key role in cracking J Dey’s murder
  • Led the investigation into the murder of controversial Bollywood actor Laila Khan
  • Cracked the Shakti Mills gangrape case in less than 24 hours and arrested all the accused within 3 days
  • Arrested Anees Ansari for planning the attack on the American School in Mumbai
  • Played a key role in the solving the firing on Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar’s driver Arif

Roy was reportedly battling cancer for a long time and was on a medical leave since 2016. He just has 5 years of service left.
