Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was released after a brief arrest by the police on 9 June. He was initially detained near Mandsaur before being arrested.
Gandhi was prohibited from visiting the violence-hit district, but he attempted to defy the security arrangements in place, riding on a motorcycle before eventually deciding to travel on foot.
Rahul Gandhi spoke to family members of the deceased farmers on phone, and said that he won’t be deterred from voicing their concern.
Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan sent out a video message appealing the people to stay united and work for the progress of the state, in an attempt to calm things when protests began to escalate.
Curfew was relaxed in Mandsaur region between 4 pm to 6 pm on 8 June. Mandsaur has been simmering for the last three days, following the killing of five farmers during the ongoing farmers’ protest.
