The Supreme Court on Monday, 9 July upheld the death sentence awarded to the convicts in the Nirbhaya gang rape case. Three of the four adult convicts had filed review petitions seeking reduction of the death sentence to life imprisonment.

A three-judge bench comprising Justice Ashok Bhushan, R Bhanumathi and headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra pronounced the verdict.

Nirbhaya’s parents lauded the decision but questioned the delay in implementation of the sentence.

We knew that review petition will be dismissed. But what next? So much time has gone by and threat to women have gone up in this span. I believe sooner they’re hanged, better it is.
Badrinath Singh, Nirbhaya’s Father
They were not juveniles. It is unfortunate that they committed such crime. This decision reaffirms our trust in the court that we will definitely get justice.
Asha Devi, Nirbhaya’s Mother
