Thirty children have lost their lives in the last 48 hours due to ‘various reasons’, said District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela.
He also confirmed that the supply of oxygen to the hospital was disrupted on Thursday. The children reportedly died in Baba Raghav Das Medical College Hospital, said District Magistrate Rajeev Rautela.
Gorakhpur is the home turf of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
It was alleged that the bill amounting to Rs 67 lakh was not cleared by hospital management.
In a press release, the DM also said terming the death of the children a result of the disruption in oxygen supply is “misleading.” He further added that no death has been caused by lack of oxygen.
Health Minister Siddharth Nath Singh told PTI, "The deaths of children were very unfortunate and government will set up an inquiry committee to ascertain if any lapse have been there and if anyone is found guilty he will be made accountable."
Some 40,000 children have died of the disease in the past four decades in the region.
