On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Vice President both spoke about the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Speaking at International Conference for Consumer Protection, PM Modi stressed that a new GST has been enacted which will benefit consumers in the long run.

GST has ended the complications of multiple indirect & hidden taxes. The consumer can see on the receipt how much of his tax was paid to the Centre and state government. In the long-term, GST will benefit consumers. It is a transparent system where consumer interest is protected.

Meanwhile, speaking at the Annual Session of PHD Chamber of Commerce, Rahul Gandhi took a dig at GST and called it a moth-eaten and punitive system that is hurting the people.

Their GST is racked with holes, moth-eaten, flawed in its structure and so punitive in its design that it’s forcing businesses to pay massive transaction costs that are destroying them. GST is creating a 21st century, computerised and connected licence raj. GST formulated by this government is creating a tsunami of tax terrorism.

Ahead of 2017 Gujarat Assembly polls, GST is seen as a key election issue. Will the public buy PM Modi’s narrative on long term gains through GST? Or will Rahul Gandhi be able to cash in on the problems caused by what has been termed as ‘India’s biggest tax reform.’
