Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah, on Tuesday, 31 July, launched a scathing attack on the Congress and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for disrupting Rajya Sabha over the Assam NRC issue.

Congress, TMC and other parties who are speaking against Assam NRC should clear their stand on Bangladeshi infiltrators.

This is a preliminary list and people will get sufficient opportunities to prove their citizenship, he said, adding that this was a question of the rights of Indian citizens and a matter of national security.

By encouraging infiltrators, how can we ensure security at the borders and internal security of the nation? I firmly believe Assam NRC is for the security of the country. We will fully implement SC’s judgement on it.
Amit Shah

Alleging that the Congress and the TMC were playing vote-bank politics over the issue, he said the NRC was in accordance with the Assam Accord and that the Congress never had the guts to implement it.

Earlier in the day, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned after Shah’s speech on the NRC draft list created an uproar in the House.

Rajiv Gandhi signed Assam Accord in 1985, which was similar to NRC. They did not have courage to implement it, we did. Who do you want to save? You want to save Bangladeshi infiltrators?
