1. Two Soldiers Killed by Militants in J&K’s Shopian District
An Army major and a jawan were killed in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district early on 3 August. Police sources said the two armed force personnel were gunned down by suspected militants. Another jawan was injured in the firing, PTI reported. Major Kamlesh Pandey, Sepoy Tanzin and Sepoy Kripal Singh were seriously injured in the attack, as per an India Today report.
According sources, as quoted by India Today:
The injured were immediately airlifted to 92 base hospital in Badami Bagh cantonment area, where Major Pandey and Sepoy Tanzin later succumbed to their injuries.

2. Dalit Woman Lynched in Agra for Alleged ‘Braid Chopping’
An elderly Dalit woman was allegedly lynched to death by two men in a village in Agra, early on 2 August.
The woman, 65-year-old Mandevi, was allegedly lynched at Mutnai village in Agra’s Dauki police station area by brothers Manish and Sonu, who suspected her of chopping off women’s braids in the area, police was quoted as saying.
Police believe the incident is connected to cases in Delhi and Gurgaon, where women have complained of having their braids mysteriously chopped off. However, no such “braid-chopping” incident has been reported yet in Dauki village.

3. ‘Virgin’ Means ‘Unmarried’: Bihar Health Minister on IGIMS Form
Following the outcry over Patna's Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) marital status declaration form, asking if the person is a "bechelor/widower/virgin", Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey on Thursday said 'virgin' just means ‘unmarried’.
The word which is used is ‘virgin’. It means unmarried girl, maiden. I don’t think these words are objectionable. But still, this issue is being raised. I had a word with the officials of the IGIMS. They said that this is the format of AIIMS and since 1983, it is being used in every organisation of the country.

4. Pujara, Rahane Guide India to 344/3 on Day 1 of Colombo Test
Cheteshwar Pujara scored another classy century as India reached 344/3 against Sri Lanka on the first day of the second Test in Colombo on Thursday.
On a day, when Pujara played his landmark 50th Test match and was also recommended for the prestigious Arjuna Award, the Saurashtra right-hander remained unbeaten on 128 – his 13th hundred in longest format.
Ajinkya Rahane (103 batting) also roared back to form after a patchy last season hitting his ninth Test ton while adding 211 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket stand as Sri Lankan bowlers once again had a poor day in the office.

5. Dilip Kumar Hospitalised, But Nothing to Worry About Says Family
Lilavati hospital sources said that the creatinine level in Dilip Kumar's blood is rising, while giving a brief on the veteran actor’s health, who was admitted on Wednesday.
The 94-year-old actor was admitted on Wednesday night, but his condition was said to be stable. Saira Banu’s nephew, Rehan, had confirmed the news to The Quint.
