BJP MPs Meenakshi Lekhi, Om Mathur, and Satyapal Singh were detained and taken to Kolkata airport police station on Saturday while they were trying to enter riot-hit Basirhat. They were part of an inquiry team formed by BJP President Amit Shah.
“On one side you are not letting 3 members of parliament to travel. On the other side you are saying that everything is under control. The fact is, nothing is under control. This is exactly what we are trying to expose,” Meenakshi Lekhi said.
“On what basis are you arresting us because Sec 144 of CrPC is not applicable here. We will get to know what the reality is. Mamata government is hiding more than they are telling what is on the ground,” she said.
Sec 144 under CrPC act has been imposed since violence erupted in Basirhat and adjacent areas.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee lashed out at the Centre for not cooperating. She said her administration would conduct a judicial inquiry into the communal violence that unfolded in the North 24 Parganas district’s areas since 3 July, according to a report by ANI.
Banerjee also criticised the Centre for “over-deploying” forces in the riot-hit zone.
