The state of Kerala is set to witness yet another step towards gender equality, with a Beauty Pageant for Transgender People taking place on 15 June, only the second of its kind in India’s history. ‘Queen of Dhwayah 2017’ will see 15 finalists battle it out for the crown.

The event is being organised by Dhwayah Arts and Charitable Society, an organisation that provides the transgender community a platform to express themselves. The organisers hope the event will go a long way in merging the community with mainstream society.

Transgender people desperately need a platform. They are humans as well. I am really happy that I’m able to support the community by being a part of the show. The contestants are getting an opportunity to do something different.

This event comes just a few weeks after Kochi Metro Rail Limited broke new ground by recruiting 23 transgender persons into their workforce, thus becoming the first government project to do so.
