Days of heavy spells of rain in caused waterlogging in Chennai in Tamil Nadu. Torrential rains for about ten hours brought the metropolis and neighbouring districts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur to a grinding halt, paralysing normal life completely.
Schools and colleges, which are closed since 31 October due to rains, were shut on Friday as well in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur districts. Heavy traffic congestion and serpentine queues of vehicles were seen across the city.
The Meteorological Department (IMD) said there maybe respite for a few hours in the day, but there are chances of heavy rains in the evening.
The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Government to pay compensation of Rs 10 lakhs to the families of two girls who were electrocuted to death because of the floods.
Flight operations at the city airport were normal, airport officials said.
While heavy waterlogging hindered free movement of vehicles, a “signalling snag,” hit train services between the St Thomas Mount and Kodambakkam suburban section since 9:30 pm. Services were restored at 3:20 am, Railway officials said.
