Commenting on Tamil Nadu politics in an exclusive interview with The Quint, P Chidambaram said that what is happening in Tamil Nadu is a matter of deep regret for people like him. Only a month ago, Pannerselvam was unanimously elected the leader by the AIADMK party. Now what is the sudden provocation to change him, the Congress leader asked.

It is the right of the people of AIADMK to elect a leader, but it is the right of the people of the state to ask if the leader you elected deserves to be the leader of Tamil Nadu. I don’t believe the leader they have elected deserves to occupy the post of CM.

The former Union Finance Minister said: “The Governor is ordinarily obliged to invite the leader of the party which commands a majority to be the Chief Minister, but he can decline a person under certain extraordinary circumstances – I think the Governor can say that. Maybe he is saying it by not going to Chennai.”
