In today’s hearing on Alok Verma’s petition, CJI Ranjan Gogoi produced an order which appears to be fair and balanced.

Gogoi’s order stated that the CVC inquiry must be concluded within two weeks, and will be headed by a sitting or a retired judge to ensure a fair inquiry.

Retired judge AK Patnaik was chosen to supervise the inquiry.

Supreme Court has also ordered Nageshwar Rao to continue as interim chief, but stated that he will not take any policy decision, only basic administrative functions. All orders passed by Rao will be given in sealed papers, all of which are to be submitted to the SC on 12 November in a sealed cover.

Supreme Court has issued a notice to the Centre in the petition by Alok Verma and Common Cause challenging leave order by Central government.
