Former Delhi Congress leader Barkha Shukla Singh joined the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on 22 April, a day after being expelled from the Congress for six years.
BJP’s national vice-president and Delhi chief, Shyam Jaju, welcomed Singh to the party on Saturday.
Singh announced on 20 April that she was stepping down as the the chief of the women's wing of the Congress' Delhi unit. She had hit out at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and the party's Delhi unit chief Ajay Maken. At the time, she was quoted as saying:
In an organisation where I myself am unsafe, how will I empower other women in that organisation? That is why I hereby resign from the post of President of Delhi Mahila Congress.
In reaction, the Congress' women wing issued a statement removing Barkha Singh from the post of president of Delhi Mahila Congress.
Singh is the latest Congress leader to defect to the BJP, after former Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely and former Youth Congress leader Amit Malik joined the fold on Tuesday.
