As Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath organises the biggest Diwali celebrations in Ayodhya with all necessary arrangements in place, a grand reception was given to ‘Rams’ and ‘Sitas’ in Ayodhya.

But to be selected as the ‘Ram and Sita couple’ who would get to descend from the ‘pushpak viman’ (helicopter), several pairs of ‘Rams’ and ‘Sitas’ had to walk down the ramp for weeks.

Auditions were held for selecting the perfect Ram and Sita in Ayodhya. Hundreds walked down the ramp to play the role of Lord Ram and Sita on Diwali in Ayodhya.

Priests Miffed with Ram and Sita’s ‘Catwalk’

The priests of Ayodhya were angered by how their faith and a legend was misused for the purpose of entertainment. They believe that ‘Rams’ and ‘Sitas’ should not have resorted to a catwalk ahead of Ramleela.

“Our religion and heritage says that an idol isn’t worshipped as long as it is sitting in a shop. But it’s only when the idol is kept in a temple that it should be worshipped. The same is the case with Ramleela, Gods are made up and impersonated. And then they are offered prayers and greetings. Today’s procession on Ram ki Paudi was disappointing. Ram was the most dignified man. His style of walking, speaking, his mannerisms. His way of living in a society, everything was dignified.”

One Can’t Be ‘Ram’ or ‘Sita’ Just Like That...

During the auditions, not just the walk and makeup, but also the attitude, smile and mannerisms of the participants were scrutinised.

“Participants were selected based on three criteria. One, Sita’s calm temperament and the way she lived. Second, costume and makeup. The last one was the way the participants walked down the ramp. Sita walked with her gaze down.”
