As Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Derails, Railway Blames Landslide

This is the third derailment incident in under two weeks.

Nine coaches of the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express derailed near Titwala early on 29 August. Ashwin Lohani, Chairman of the Railway Board, told news agency ANI that the train may have derailed due to “a sudden landslide,” caused by incessant rains.

According to the Railways, no casualties have been reported so far. Emergency rescue teams have been pressed into service. Lohani added that 35 buses have been dispatched to the accident site.

Aggrieved passengers, however, were forced to walk on tracks for almost a kilometre before they could reach a nearby road. One of the passengers rued that she asked passersby for help but none of the police pulled over to assist her.
