Beaches might be a place to relax for most people, but for Andrew Van De Merwe, they are a blank canvas. The professional calligrapher has been beautifying beaches in and around Cape Town, South Africa, for over a decade.

He also conducts calligraphy workshops for young people from at-risk communities.

The students who are participating in this particular workshop live by the sea, they live in a fishing community, so they have a relationship with the ocean. And I think connecting with artists who are doing different things helps them to see what opportunities can be out there for them.

The temporary nature of his art doesn’t bother Van De Merwe. He believes it gives a clean slate to start over and do better. He plans to conduct calligraphy workshops in the USA in 2019.
