After being denied a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) , Chotu Rautia of Sundargarh's Jalada village would have to remain homeless. Rautia’s family lost their home to the Rourkela steel plant and his father’s home, which was built at a resettlement colony, was old and crumbling.

The house has broken. Now, where will I sleep? When officials came for a survey they promised to build a house for me, and I ran from pillar to post in vain.
Chotu Rautia, Resident

The Block Development Officer (BDO) Purna Chandra Bhoi, claims that the 50-year-old man does not stay inside the toilet, but outside. He says, “I will conduct further inquiry into his applications for a home. If he gets a house, it will take 2-3 months. Meanwhile, we are mulling where he should be given shelter for the time being.”
