The Berlin Zoo on Tuesday, 11 December, released a new footage of a 10-day-old polar bear cub, snuggled up in its mother Tonja's fur. The footage shows mother Tonja tenderly nursing and licking the cub.
Tonja gave birth to her cub on 1 December, much to the pleasant surprise of the zoo authorities, as polar bear births in captivity are rare. Between March and April Tonja was mated several times by polar bear father Volodya.
The first ten days are key to the survival of the newborn bear, so visitors to the zoo won't be able to see the cub. Tonja and her cub won't leave their enclosure until the spring when they will be seen in public.
The birth of the cub is a happy occasion for the Berlin Zoo after its beloved polar bear Knut died in 2011.
