Pakistan’s General Pervez Musharraf, who came to power in 1999 in a bloodless coup against current Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was acquitted in January of the murder of separatist leader Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti in 2006, removing one of several cases against him.

Bugti led a tribal campaign to win political autonomy for Balochistan, Pakistan’s biggest province and extremely rich in mineral resources.

He was killed in a battle between tribal militants and government forces in the restive province in 2006.
