Mrunal Thakur is on a high. She’s all set to star in a Netflix series which is a prequel to Baahubali alongside Rahul Bose and has two Bollywood films—Super 30, opposite Hrithik Roshan, and Batla House with John Abraham releasing soon.
While her previous film Love Sonia didn’t fare very well at the box office, Mrunal seems unfazed by it. “The producers of the film knew that it would not reach a large number of people. but I’m glad that a certain section understood and enjoyed the film,” she says.
In the prequel to the Baahubali series she plays Sivagami, a role Ramya Krishnan essayed in the first two parts. “I really loved what the character stood for, her strength and her demeanor. What’s different about this show is that you’ll get to know how Sivagami became the woman you know, and that for me is interesting and yet very challenging at the same time,” says Mrunal.
When the subject ventures to Super 30 director Vikas Bahl, who has been called out for sexual harrassment in the midst of the #MeToo storm that hit Bollywood, she says,
The environment on set was extremely professional and we all were just focused on our work. However, if someone is found guilty, they must be punished. It has taken me six years to get where I am because I revolted every time someone said anything inappropriate. On one of my sets someone said, ‘Arre isko dekho, is mein toh do ladkiyan fit ho jayengi. (Look at her body, it seems like two women could fit in there.)’ I instantly gave it back to him and said, ‘If my director has no issue with the way I am, who are you to comment?’Mrunal Thakur, Actor
She does mention that she is happy that the #MeToo movement is finally here, even if it was long due. She signs off saying that there’s still a lot to look forward to: “2019 is going to be a big year for me, and I’m very excited about it.”
