In a grievous case of corporal punishment, a student of a govt school in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh was thrashed so badly by his teacher that his hand suffered a fracture. The scholar, Pradyumna Kumar, alleged that he was beaten up by teacher for not wearing the correct uniform.

There are laws that exist under the IPC, meant to protect children against corporal punishment. According to IPC section 83, any child who has not done homework or has not dressed in an appropriate fashion should not incite any form of corporal punishment in schools in India. The Section 23 of the Juvenile Justice Act 2000 prohibits cruelty to children. But poor implementation of these laws means that offenders go scot free. (Inputs: ANI)
