Earth Hour 2016: Why PM Modi Batted For Renewable Energy

On 19 March, be prepared to switch off the lights between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm to observe the annual Earth Hour. The World Wide Fund for Nature is organising this one-hour event on 19 March across the world to protect the planet.

Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007.

In the week leading up to Earth Hour, we will bring you some articles from The Quint’s archive to highlight the concerns of the climate crossroad.

On 2 October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong pitch for environment protection and energy conservation, linking them to Gandhian ideals.

Inaugurating a rooftop solar plant for Khunti court and district collectorate, which is the first for any court in India, he said, “Gandhiji was a big supporter of environment protection (sic.). That is why I decided to come here.”
